MDR290 Dual Paperless Course Recorder:
MDR290 course recorder plays a crucial role to record heading / rudder history without chart or recording pens. In fact, data from gyro, Pilot, and GPS will be recorded on SD memory, will be displayed on LCD touch panel display, and will be composed in 3 parts; main function display area, data and status, and margin area. The YDK MDR290 course recorder has 2 versions (Channel Models).
V#1: Single Channel – which records heading and quadrant.
V#2: Dual Channel – which records heading, quadrant, and rudder angle.
What is Course Recorder?
A course recorder is essentially the vessel’s “course history log” in visual form.
It’s an instrument that continuously records the ship’s heading over time so the bridge team, pilots, and investigators can review how the vessel has been steered.
How It Works?
Input source:
The course recorder receives a continuous heading signal from the gyrocompass (sometimes magnetic compass backup).
Mechanism:
Older models: A pen and paper drum the paper roll moves at a constant rate, and the pen shifts left/right according to the ship’s heading, producing a trace line.
Modern models: Digital display with stored data that can be printed or transferred electronically.
Recording rate:
Typically updates every second or faster.
Time scale:
Adjustable (e.g., 6 hours per chart sheet).
Course Recorder and Rudder Angle Relationship:
Rudder angle is the main cause of heading changes, and the course recorder’s job is to show not just the result (course change) but also the steering input that produced it.
Having both on the same trace gives an immediate cause-and-effect picture. Heading trace recording tells you what happened, but the rudder angle trace tells you why it happened.
